How it works

Printing cost is a fixed amount plus a per-page amount, and both depend on the marketplace, the ink, the paper and whether the trim counts as large. Short black-ink books pay the fixed amount only, with no per-page cost at all, which is why a sixty-page book and a hundred-and-ten-page book cost the same to print.

Since June 2025 the print royalty is tiered. At or above the threshold for the marketplace you earn sixty per cent of the list price minus the printing cost. Below it you earn fifty per cent minus the same printing cost, which is why dropping a price by a few cents can cost you a great deal more than a few cents.

The minimum list price is the printing cost divided by the royalty rate. Amazon will not let you go below it.

What this does not include

Bleed and cover finish do not change the printing cost, so they are not asked for. Expanded distribution pays a lower rate and is not covered here. Neither is Kindle Unlimited, which pays by pages read rather than by sale.

Rates read from Amazon’s own printing cost pages in September 2026. Hardcover rates are given for Amazon.com only, because those are the ones we have verified. Amazon can revise these. The figure that governs your book is the one shown in your own KDP account, and you should check it there before setting a price.

Built by a nonfiction press that runs this arithmetic on its own books every week. If you have written something, the For authors page explains what we do with it.
